Course Objectives: This highly interactive workshop is aimed at large exporting companies who regularly receive or handle Letters of Credit (L/Cs). It assumes a basic working knowledge of L/Cs and alternative payment methods such as Documentary Collections and Bills of Exchange. The course will initially revisit the basic principles of Letters of Credit going on to develop a greater emphasis on the application of the ICC governing rules (current version UCP 600) and International Standard Banking Practice (ISBP).Delegates will get the chance to review recent ‘real life' L/Cs as case studies and as a basis for discussion and practice. Course outline:

  • The current marketplace & issues
  • Review of L/C features
  • The roles of the banks
  • L/C Availability and Negotiation
  • The Application of UCP600 and ISBP
  • The UCP articles
  • Case studies and exercises (including a review of recent/current examples of L/Cs)
  • Mitigating bank and country risk (confirmation - open & silent)
  • Commitment to negotiate unconfirmed L/Cs
  • Standby Letters of Credit
  • Variations of Letters of Credit
  • L/Cs and Performance Bonds
  • Getting the best deal from the banks
  • Online services and pricing
  • L/C Financing

Course Materials:
All delegates will receive a copy of Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP600), as well as detailed course notes, including presentation slides, case studies and exercises.
