Governance

Established in 1813, the North Staffs Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the longest established business organisation in the North Midlands.

Today the NSCCI is a thriving organisation incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee and with substantial assets (including a modern office building) that are used for the benefit of members.

With over 1000 members the NSCCI is "owned" by its members, each of whom undertakes to meet the liabilities of the Chamber to an amount not exceeding two pounds per member.

To represent members' views, and interests, the Chamber has a Council of 40 members elected from the general membership. The Council also includes five ex-officio members who are Chairmen of key Chamber committees, plus two honorary members, the Vice Chancellors of Keele and Staffordshire Universities, and a representative of the Minority Business Association.

A Board of Directors is elected by Council members from amongst its own number and the Board is responsible for the proper running of the Chamber including compliance with the Companies Act etc Officers include an elected President, Deputy President and Honorary Treasurer. The operations of the Chamber are led by a full time appointed Chief Executive who is also a Director.

While the Board directs the policy and strategy of the Chamber, the Council meets 4 times every year and provides a sounding board on a wide range of issues, ensuring that the views and interests of members are always fully represented to the Board.

The Chamber also has five key committees on which members serve. These committees develop policy and guide Chamber activity in specific areas:

Membership
Transport
Employment & Human Resources
International Trade
Business & Finance

The Chamber has a number of other committees and interest groups to promote the interests and views of the membership. One group comprises a panel to feed information on local business conditions to the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee, others represent the interests of manufacturers, retailers etc. Ad hoc groups are also formed to respond on issues such as business crime, regeneration etc.

The Chamber employs a staff of 27 employees to deliver services and support to members. The staff are led by a Chief Executive and there is a proven internal management structure.
